MPs join criticism against Edgware plans

27th July 2023

Bob Blackman, MP for Harrow East, has recently criticised the Edgware redevelopment plans in Parliament, which are 'going to totally change Edgware town centre, morphing it into a Canary Wharf twin and overwhelming the infrastructure'. You can watch/read the full speech below.

"Now there is a truly ridiculous proposal, which has astonished even me, the cluster of high-rise buildings in Edgware. Now, technically, this is actually in the neighbouring borough and the neighbouring constituency, but on a small site there are plans for 29 storeys for one block and five other blocks of 24 storeys.

This is going to totally change Edgware town centre, morphing it into a Canary Wharf twin and overwhelming the infrastructure and actually will affect my constituency as well. Just to make it worse, the construction will take more than four years, killing the businesses and the SMEs already on the high street, so I am pleased to say that my constituents who are responding to my consultation on this; and 96% so far are totally opposed."

A week after that speech, Hendon MP Matthew Offord launched his own consultation. Tweeting against the current plans, he agreed "While I believe Edgware needs investment and some redevelopment, dense, high-rise buildings will be out-of-keeping with the area." He added: "I am running a petition calling on Barnet Council and the London Mayor to listen to residents and reject the proposals". This can be found here.

"I share residents' concerns about proposals to redevelop The Broadwalk Centre in Edgware which include construction of 29-storey high-rise flats.

While I believe Edgware needs investment and some redevelopment, dense, high-rise buildings will be out-of-keeping with the area."
